Our Brucejack operation is now recruiting for a Wet Assayer with a competitive base salary between $75,000-$85,000 dependent on experience, skills, and competencies with consideration to internal equity with an additional short-term incentive of 10%.

The Assayer’s primary responsibility is to conduct metal concentration analysis using a variety of chemical processes and analytical instrument analysis, including ICP multi-element analysis, atomic absorption – gold and/ or silver, and Leco carbon and Sulphur analysis.

Perform following duties, with safety being the number one priority:

  • Assists Supervisor with processing of ore samples to determine grade, value and mineral properties
  • Ensures daily/weekly production targets are met and makes appropriate changes where necessary to streamline processes
  • Perform daily verification on a variety of lab equipment including dispensers, pipettes, analytical balances and other lab equipment
  • Identify and record any abnormal observations.
  • Conduct routine quality checks as required and report data immediately to the Supervisor if results are outside of acceptable parameters
  • Ensure that all work is conducted in a safe manner in accordance with applicable legislation, company policy, standards, and procedures
  • Prepares mineral/ore sample tests using multi-acid digestion techniques and other sample decomposition methods provided by the Chief Assayer or Supervisor 
  • Gold digestion by instrument finish
  • Gold digestion by gravimetric finish
  • Preparing, handling, and digesting high grade gold samples including dore pin samples
  • Preparing reagents, instrument calibration solutions, instrument QC solutions, and internal standards
  • Operate and carry out preventative maintenance on LECO CS844, Agilent AAS 240 FS, and Agilent ICP-OES 5800
  • Assist Chief Assayer or Supervisor on method validation and verifications
  • Assist Chief Assayer or Supervisor on preparing and reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs) on analytical instruments
  • Review and evaluate instrument calibrations
  • Review and perform data assessment and make sure all instrumental QCs are within internal QA&QC criteria before submitting for data evaluation
  • Monitor consumables and supplies and liaise with Supervisor or designate to ensure that correct stock levels are maintained
  • Ensure that equipment is maintained in good order making the supervisor aware of any damaged or defective equipment or any equipment requiring adjustment
  • Practice good housekeeping and maintain a clean and tidy work area
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all Newmont and occupational, mine site and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Participates in pre-start meeting, weekly safety meetings, training and development initiatives to remain current with technology, policies and procedures
  • Other duties as required by the Supervisor or Chief Assayer

About You  

Position requirements include, but are not limited to:   

  • A Diploma/ bachelor’s degree in chemistry is advantageous combined with three to five (3-5) years in a similar work environment complimented with knowledge of analytical chemistry, instrument operations, and/or mineral processing. BC Certified Assayer is an asset. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Have the ability to work safely under minimum supervision
  • Previous experience operating a variety of Geochemistry instrumentation and chemical preparation
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Effective organizational, time management and analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills to include data processing and data base management
  • Familiar with laboratory information management system (LIMS)
  • Work at remote location (camp) on a 14 days on / 12 days off/ 2 days travelling rotation
  • Be able to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50lbs throughout a work shift
  • Be able maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts
  • Able to work in areas of extreme weather conditions
  • Able to work in close quarters with the team
