Our Brucejack operation is now recruiting for the position of Production Database Geologist with a competitive base salary between $85,000.00-$105,000.00 dependant on experience, skills, and qualifications. The offered base salary will be determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills and competencies with consideration to internal equity. 

Purpose of the Role

The Production Database Geologist will support multiple teams including Production Geology, Mine Operations/Grade Control, Geological Modelling, and the Mine Planning department by providing a consistent and reliable point of contact for geological data requirements. 

As a primary function, the Production Database Geologist will continually update and provide QAQC-approved assay, survey and geological data to these teams for use in decision-making.  They will operate the geological database (currently acQuire) with a key focus on real-time quality assurance and quality control of assay, survey and geological data from extensive RC and Diamond drill programs to support mine production and resource business functions.  The Production Database Geologist will import assay and survey data, troubleshoot importing issues or data discrepancies, will review all new assay and survey data according to the requirements of the QAQC program, approve data for use, and distribute tailored exports regularly to site teams for use. 

The Production Database Geologist will work with on-site and third-party laboratories to investigate any data quality concerns as required by the assay QAQC program and will become proficient in understanding the different flow paths of the geological samples through the labs to develop a strong understanding of laboratory data and potential quality concerns.  They will also complete regular underground RC drill sampling audits and quality assurance visits.   

The role requires a strong commitment to the highest levels of professionalism.  The Production Database Geologist will have careful attention to detail, strong communication skills, be highly organized, and be able to manage multiple shifting priorities.

 

Responsibilities

Perform the following duties with a positive attitude towards continuous improvement, with safety being the number one priority:

  • Import and review assay and survey results from different mine-related programs according to QAQC program requirements; and request follow-up from the laboratories as required.
  • Develop proficiency in geological assay data quality assurance and quality control by monitoring and evaluating geological and analytical data quality on an ongoing basis, completing QAQC reports, and implementing new QAQC programs to meet Newmont standards.
  • Assist with laboratory assurance reviews and attend lab tours for site labs and third-party labs as required.
  • Complete regular underground site visits to drills to ensure compliance with sampling and surveying protocols.
  • Onboarding and training of new underground grade control personnel.
  • Operate the geological database (acQuire), and support data generators with data entry issues or data fixing as applicable; assist in troubleshooting technical issues, performing root cause analysis, and resolving data integrity problems.
  • Review analytical data for completeness and follow up with data generators on any data quality concerns while promoting a positive attitude.

  • Identify opportunities to modify data collection processes/data entry forms in support of improving data validation, preventing data entry errors, or ensuring data completeness.
  • Maintain a professional work environment and encourage technical excellence and continuous improvement from all members of the Geology and Mine Operations teams.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with Newmont safety policies and governmental safety regulations including those of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation and WorksafeBC.
  • Assistance with maintaining or modifying future and existing database systems that track mine activities, related KPIs, material movement and production statistics
  • Perform other related duties as required.

About You  

Position requirements include, but are not limited to:   

Through direction from the Principal Geologist- Database and QAQC and Chief Mine Geologist (while on mine site), this position is responsible for assisting in maintaining integrity and quality of geological and assay data according to company standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Geoscience, Computer Sciences, Engineering, or Information Technology with a minimum of two years of relevant experience. 
  • Potential to register as a Geologist-in-training (GIT), or actively registered with EGBC as P.Geo/GIT
  • A positive attitude and belief in continuous improvement
  • Knowledge of the types of geological data and their purpose; and an understanding of the potential quality concerns related to mining and exploration data
  • Experience working with large tables of data, sensitive and confidential information and deadlines
  • Knowledge of relational database management systems and object-oriented database management systems.
  • Knowledge of Vulcan and AcQuire and SQL Management Studio software
  • Demonstrated success with the operation and management of a database system is considered an asset.
  • Underground mine production geology experience is considered an asset.

SKILLS

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with an eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Understanding of structured query language (SQL) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven experience in understanding and/or managing data flow, including the ability to assess data quality and ensure database integrity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, community and the environment.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements and procedures
  • Cross-cultural awareness with an understanding and sensitivity of the challenges associated with differences in cultural and economic backgrounds.

  • Work at a remote location (camp) on a 13 days on/13 days off rotation
