Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

Newcrest has an open position for aFirst Cook with a broad skill set, strong supervisory skills and excellent interpersonal abilitiesto join our team at the Brucejack Mine.  

Working as a leader of our team, you will be responsible for all aspects of hot food preparation and production in a remote camp serving up to 650 occupants. Taking direction from the Executive Chef and Head Chef. The First Cook is responsible for the daily operation and supervision of staff in the kitchen and dining room. Additional duties include assisting with menu planning, quality food production, staff planning, inventory management and kitchen administration, while ensuring high quality standards of food safety and sanitation is achieved.  

Specific role and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Producing daily menu for lunch and dinner.
  • Ensuring safe work habits, food safety, and company standards are met.
  • Provide employee training working with the Executive Chef to create development plans for the team and individuals.
  • Proactively monitor inventory and prepare food and supply orders in coordination with your Head Chef.
  • Ensure food quality and nutritional standards are met.
  • Ensure special diets and allergen concerns are accommodated and catered for.
  • Assist with inventory, menu planning and recipe building.
  • Create and implement new recipes and ideas into meal plans.
  • Working with your Head Chef to implement consistent kitchen planning, systems, and efficient production schedules.
  • Review, manage and oversee cleaning lists and schedules to ensure proper sanitation standards are exceeded.
  • Advise management of purchasing requirements with a focus on minimizing waste and avoiding product shortages.
  • Other requested duties and responsibilities to support the successful development of Newcrest Camp Services Department.

About You:

  • 5 years of kitchen or catering experience in a supervisory role. Including, high- quality, high volume food service. 
  • Considerable experience cooking for special diets such as gluten-free, vegetarian, diabetic, low fat, low sugar, etc.
  • Valid Standard First Aid with CPR and Advanced Food Safe Certificates
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, organizational & supervisory skills. 
  • Proficient computer skills in Word, Excel, and Outlook.

We are particularly interested in you if you are a strong leader that works well under pressure and has a broad range of experience which includes cooking within remote camps, hotel/catering and fine dining restaurant environments.  As a strong team player, you have excellent communication and leadership skills, which include the ability to create a positive team environment where everyone supports each other to be successful while maintaining high standards of service. 

Lastly, please note the following physical aspects of this position: 

  • Constant standing and walking throughout a 12-hour shift.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs.

Please note, extra hours may be required from time to time to fulfil your responsibilities.
