Senior Lead, Tailings and Water Management

Job Summary / General Accountability

Reporting to the Director of Technical Services with indirect reporting to the Director Social, Environmental and Regulatory Affairs, the Senior Lead, Tailings and Water Management will provide leadership and accountability for defining sustainable, practical, and economically sound tailings, and water stewardship strategies for the development of the Galore Creek Project. This will require the successful candidate to work across disciplines and technical study groups and collaborate closely with the Social, Environment and Regulatory Approval (SERA) team to ensure the tailings and water stewardship approach is considered and incorporated into ongoing environmental baseline, community engagement, tailings, mine development, and overall infrastructure studies.



The full-time salaried position with benefits and bonus incentives is based out of the Galore Creek Vancouver Office, with travel to the Project site as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on common values of health, safety, environment, and communities (HSEC) shared by the owners (Teck and Newmont).
  • Be the principle technical lead in developing and managing tailings and water management plans and infrastructure designs ensuring integration of technical studies, regulatory requirements, and social engagement strategies.
    • Lead the tailings and water management planning process inclusive of environmental and social impacts appropriately integrating Design for Closure concepts in alignment with owner requirements, ensuring appropriate Tahltan involvement and appropriate integration of traditional land use information, cultural heritage, and Indigenous Peoples knowledge, in particular Tahltan knowledge.
    • Collaborate with the Social, Environmental and Regulatory Affairs (SERA) team to ensure integration of technical studies with regulatory requirements and social engagement strategies.
    • Oversee development of a sustainable tailings management strategy for the project aligned with GISTM and inclusive of options assessments considering various tailings management technologies (e.g., stream separation, cycloning, etc.); management of potentially acid generating (PAG) tailings; development of risk-based design criteria; design of geotechnically-stable retention structures; development of a closure plan with a goal of minimizing long-term care and maintenance.
    • Provide technical expertise related to hydrologic design criteria (e.g. peak flows and volume for various frequencies of rainfall and snowmelt events), hydrologic assessments, site-wide water balances, option assessments for water management infrastructure, hydraulic and streamflow evaluations, and design of water diversions and control structures.
    • Support development of water balance / water quality model, excess water management plans, including developing an understanding of anticipated water quality and any potential treatment requirements.
    • Coordinate tailings and water management engineering aspects of the Galore Creek project with EPCM firms working as part of the owner’s team.
    • Support the development of capital and operating costs estimates for the tailings and water management design along with inputs and assumptions for specific economic analyses related to the required studies.
    • Provide input into the overall project and operational business model, along with other disciplines such as geology, geotechnical, mining, metallurgical process engineering.
    • Develop and oversee annual budgeting and periodic forecasts for tailings and water management studies and development.
    • Participate as a member of senior technical staff, in decision-making and initiatives site wide.
    • Follow appropriate internal accounting controls and take the necessary corrective action to protect the assets of GCMC to enable effective cost, financial and management reporting.

Key Competencies, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Degree in Engineering with a focus on Civil-Geotechnical, Civil-Hydrologic or a related technical discipline from an accredited curriculum.
  • Demonstrated experience in the mining industry, preferably in remote and complex mountainous terrain, ideally with direct experience working in NW British Columbia or the Yukon.
  • Greater than 15 years of solid, progressive experience in open pit mining, ideally with experience in an operating setting.
  • Eligible for Professional registration with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
  • Good understanding of mine development and operating best practices including management of health and safety, exploration, resource development and planning, mining and mine rock management, processing, logistics, and specifically regulatory matters including closure planning.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. The ability to write clear and concise reports is particularly important, as well as the ability to present technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Proven ability to build relationships across multi-disciplinary technical teams and work as an effective team member on projects.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
